MBI International

Founded as a 501(c)(3) company in 1981 by a Michigan economic task force, MBI became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Michigan State University Foundation in 2005.

During the last 25 years, MBI has built a successful track record of innovation in industrial biotechnology, commercializing various products and processes through joint-ventures and start-up companies. MBI leaders have sharpened the company's mission, focusing on developing and commercializing sustainable biobased technologies.

MBI is collaborating with OBT Associate Director Bruce Dale to scale-up and commercialize the ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX) pretreatment technology. AFEX has proven to be a promising pretreatment method that is effective for a variety of biomass feedstocks. MSU and MBI are also partnering to develop an integrated cellulosic processing production chain, including biomass crop selection and cultivation, biomass supply chain logistics, pretreatment, enzyme treatment, fermentation, and product recovery.
