At MSU, there's more to the bioeconomy than research

MSU researchers are conducting research aimed at making Michigan's transition to a bioeconomy efficient, environmentally sound and economically advantageous. At the same, the university as a whole is supporting the bioeconomy through a number of efforts that increase the sustainability of both on-campus and off-campus facilities.

  • All diesel trucks, tractors and other equipment used on south campus and at off-campus properties have been switched to B20 biodiesel, which is a blend of 20 percent biodiesel made from soy and 80 percent petroleum diesel.
  • Manure, animal bedding, leftover animal feed and leaves from south campus farms are composted to provide more than 12,000 cubic yards of mulch each year. The mulch is used by MSU Grounds Maintenance and the general public. Waste wood products and materials are also recycled and used as mulch by MSU Grounds Maintenance.
  • The Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education uses solar power as a secondary power source.
  • Extra produce from on- and off-campus farms is given to local food banks and food harvesting groups.
