This presentation will explore some of the basic concepts of modern patent practice from an inventor’s perspective. The presenters will begin with a discussion of the most common question posed to patent practitioners: is my invention patentable? From there, the presenters will consider the legal standards for patentability and then proceed chronologically through an example patent process, starting with the preparation of an invention disclosure and concluding with the grant of a patent. Along the way, the presenters will consider numerous graphical examples designed to illustrate important concepts and demonstrate useful techniques.
Topics covered in this tutorial will include patent searching, invention disclosure preparation, patent application types, patent application content, patent examination/prosecution and patent infringement.
